News from the past, CARPENTERS: To You!

NOTE:  "Q&A Page" contains RECENT questions about the "Japanese Singles Box!"
04 June 2008 - RECENT UPDATES
Not too much interesting has happened in the recent Carpenters history.  However, Richard has had some success in the Phillipines with a new recording of "Something In Your Eyes" as a duet with Claire Dela Fuente.
See the music video (featuring Richard) ! The song was originally released 21 years ago on his "TIME" album.
Also, recently in Japan the "Mini LP" set has been re-released in a "Now & Then" themed box.  The CDs are the 1998 "Remaster classics" versions.
15 October 2007 - THE KC STORY SCRAPPED
Suprise, suprise:  The 2nd interesting Carpenters DVD of the year has been scrapped.  The company that was originally going to release the DVD issued me this statement:

Sadly DD Home Entertainment went into administration and were bought by Simply Media Tv. We are currently in negotiation with Sony to continue with these titles and we are hoping to be able to release this in the New Year.

12 September 2007 - NEW CARPENTERS FORUM

Today I am proud to announce that we have added a forum to the website.  While there are a few Carpenters-related forums (A forum dedicated to A&M Records, and a forum dedicated to Karen, herself), we are proud to open the first CARPENTERS-only related forum.  Join this forum to discuss anything from latest new to just about anything!  We are still in the process of keeping the forum up, so bare with any of our problems!  .

23 July 2007 - THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY DVD RELEASE
Fans: I apologize that I've been away for so long.  I've beens studying abroad in Tours, France for the last month.  I was sent an email today from DD Home Entertainment, a dvd distribution company, stating that we will see the first official DVD release of THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY on 8 October 2007.  So far it is set only to be released in the UK for the price of £12.99 (23$).    I appreciate the contact and it is nice to know that companies know of our website.
I have requested some more information, I will let you all know.

20 May 2007 - BBC DVD CANCELLED
Sites like Amazon and CD Japan have taken the forthcoming BBC dvd off of their site.  CD Japan sent out emails saying that the release was cancelled. Dissapointing news, but it's not the first time a new Carpenters release has been withdrawn.  We'll keep you posted if the release should show up again. Hopefully they are making adjustments to the DVD or adding the recent UK documentary.  Who knows?

1 May 2007 - 2007 NEWS / 50TH ANNIVERSARY
I have just received word from Richard's camp and  there is no plan, this moment, on releasing an anticipated US SINGLES BOX.
Also that there is no plan for anything for the 40th Anniversary, which is one year away.  Richard's  assistant is Alana, who is now keeping the website up (to my understanding).
Remember do send your wishes to the FANS ASK part of the official website.

25 February 2007 - UPDATE ON JAPANESE RELEASES
Japan has been busy this year with compilations!  The lastest compilations, released last week, were the 2-CD sets that we discussed on 4 January.  There was nothing special about the releases, they were simple photo paper sleeves that housed 2 of the "Remastered Classics" albums. The highlight, if you didn't have time to purchase these discs when they were in print, you can get them now before these go out of print.  This edition has the "Carpenters" (tan album) with the mispelling of the band's name.  The sets are selling rapidly, so make sure to order them soon.
I have received many emails asking me whether or not to buy these sets.  I personally am not going to invest in them since I already own all of the remastered classics.  I do consider myself a 'completist', but a paper sleeve is not enough to do me in.  The next release, however, is worth buying

 - LIVE AT THE BBC DVD UPDATE
Live DVD release of footage from The Carpenters performances in London in November 1971, March 1974, and December 1976.  This NTSC-Region TWO DVD is still set for a 25 April release.  Price is $36 list price.  AVAILABLE ONLY IN JAPAN.

 - RICHARD WORKING ON A UK DOCUMENTARY

Richard is currently working on a NEW documentary that is set to debut in the UK later on this year.  The documentary is titled "Only Yesterday."

21 February 2006 - LIVE AT THE BBC COMPILATION DVD!
Coming to DVD 25 April 2007 Japan is AMAZING!  Their first live concerts compilation - Live at the BBC!  This compilation is set to include the complete BBC concerts.  The DVD is also rumoured to have a documentary of the BBC shows.  More news as it becomes available!
16 January 2006 - JAPANESE COMPILATION RE-ISSUES
Although not earth shattering news, 2 Carpenters compilations are being re-issued in early 2006:
1. Yesterday Once More - this compilation is out of print everywhere except Germany, and now Japan is reissuing this "priced down" edition for $24.52 (3080 yen).  "Yesterday Once More" first was released in 1985 and then re-issued as part of the "Remastered Classics" editions in 1998, and then put out of print. The release date is set for tomorrow, 17 January 2007.

2. "Their Greatest Hits" - This album was first released in England as "Only Yesterday" and topped the charts in 1991.  The CD has been released in Japan before, and now will be reissued 7 March 2007 for 1980 yen ($15.77usd).

4 January 2006 - JAPANESE ALBUM REISSUES FOR MARCH!
After the exciting "Japanese Singles Box" release in 2006, Japan will now re-issue the first 10 Carpenters albums as double album limited edition sets.
What does this mean?
This means that 2 albums will be housed in one package.  We assume that this means each set will be 5- 2-CD sets to collect.
Here is the estimated release info:
Ticket To Ride / Close To You
Carpenters / A Song For You
Now & Then / Horizon
A Kind of Hush / Passage
Made In America / Voice Of The Heart
The estimated release date is 21 March 2006.  Remember!  These will be limited edition!  This is an excellent chance for US fans to catch up on the remastered classics that have gone out of print in the states!
27 December 2006 - JAPANESE SET - NOW OUT OF PRINT!
Just after its release, the Japanese singles box set is NOW OUT OF PRINT.  Yes, you heard it here, the limited edition set is no longer in print.  The sets have been sold in music stores all over Japan as well as online stores.  CD Japan has reportedly SOLD OUT of the set, leaving sites like and with the remaining sets.
Deciding on whether or not you are going to get this?  Act now.  I nearly missed my chance, don't miss yours!

19 December 2006 - "JAPANESE SINGLES BOX" - NOW AVAILABLE!
After being postponed for nearly 2 months, this box set has finally hit stores in Japan!  This 33-8" disc collection is a collectors' dream.
While my review will be posted in early January, this is an outline of the 'newly' released tracks in this set:
"I Kept On Loving You" - Single version with a clean start.
"Bless the Beasts and Children" - the SOUNDTRACK version.
"Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" - ORIGINAL version
"Please Mr. Postman" - SINGLE version with alternate vocals
"Solitaire" - only available before on "Gold" - the SINGLE version
"The Christmas Song" - Clean Start
"Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" - SINGLE EDIT!
"Make Believe It's Your First Time" - without the spoken intro
"When You've Got What It Takes" - clean start!

Sounds like a fantastic set.  My review coming in January.

THE JAPANESE SINGLES BOX SET

The "Single Collection" box is scheduled to be released in Japan on the 13th of this month.  The tracks listing is still unavailable.

18 August 2006 - UPDATE ON THE SINGLES BOXED SET
Hello, long time no see!  There hasn't been much news to update on lately, but we have received a bit of news from some Japanese CD sites that the singles boxed set is set to be released the first of November valued around $250.  CD Japan also says that the set is to be a "Limited release."  We will, of course, report when we know more information!
26 May 2006 - UPDATE ON RICHARD'S CHRISTMAS ALBUM
Wondering what is up with Richard's rumored Christmas album?  So have we?  Well we don't have to wait for longer.  Richard unveiled on his recent UK interview that the album will be out in 2007, following the 10-year R.C. Carpenter cycle (for example 1987: "Time" ; 1997: "Pianist, Arranger, Composer Conductor"; 2007 Christmas album).
He reportedly said it will continue very new songs as well as Christmas classics.
We will, of course, keep you posted.

To hear the interview with Opal, see the home page for the link.
7 April 2006 - FOLLOW-UP ON"THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION"
The 3-disc set has already been released in the Netherlands...many retail shops such as the Amazon stores are beginning to ship out their copies.  I have heard that the disc is excellent in sound and is the ORIGINAL album mixes (just the same as "The Remastered Classics").  We will keep you posted on the exact mixes and information.
The UK edition is penciled in for a 17 April release date.  We will keep you posted.

1 April 2006 - MORE NEWS ON "THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION"
Sources are pointing that we will see this release, or a similar release, in the UK as well as the Netherlands. We'll keep you posted.  It also looks that the new Japanese documentary DVD "Rock Legends" will see a July/summer release.  Also a re-release of last years' GOLD in the UK has been topping the charts due to advertisement for the UK's Mother's day.  More on that soon!
17 March 2006 - MORE ON "THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION"
Thanks to we have more information on "The Ultimate Collection" that is set for release next week.
The cover is nothing particularly new, one might say it's a mix between the 1985 "A&M Classics, v.2" and the new "Gold" releases.
The UPDATED track listing is listed below.
The release date is now switched to 23 March, pay not attention the the release date on the Aussie website as the set is not yet released.  We will keep you posted as the date approaches.
12 March 2006 - NEW "ULTIMATE COLLECTION" COMPILATION
The ULTIMATE compilation is set for release in the Netherlands the 21st of March!  The tracklisting is amazing, it is EVERY single from the United States and as a bonus it includes tracks from Karen and Richard's solo albums "Karen Carpenter," "Time," and "Pianist, Arranger, Composer Conductor."
Another interesting fact is that this CD is 32-bit remastered which is supposedly very state of the art.  My assumptions is that these are remixes and not the actual single version that are planned to be released on the forthcoming Japanese box set, but we will try to keep you posted.

3 November 2005 - LIVE AT THE PALLADIUM:  DVD RELEASE
Way out from left field has come this bit of news!  According to a HMV magazine/flyer a DVD is being planned for the concert LIVE AT THE PALLADIUM.  I have never seen any footage from this concert and didn't know that any video footage existed.  The magazine said it was to include a few bonus features as well.  The LP was released in England in 1976 and the CD edition was released in the 1990's in Japan and the UK.  The LP's length is about 45 minutes and is not the complete concert.  It is lacking what was on their play list for their other shows that year, including "I Need To Be In Love" among others.  Hopefully we will see the whole concert.
It's also very possible that this could be the BBC Concert in '71 or the Talk of The Town Concert, or any other of the duos London concerts, but it would certainly be a treat to have that very concert on video format.
HMV's employee news letter reported that it should be expected around spring 2006.

Thanks to Simon Burrows for allowing us to be the first site to report!

23 October 2005 - 22 HITS - 10th Anniversary Rerelease!
Excellent news for collectors!  In Japan in early December A&M Records and Universal are set to release the 10th Anniversary Edition of the popular compliation 22 Hits.  The set is also going to include ORIGINAL MASTER KARAOKE as it's second disc.  The 2nd disc will also include the Karaoke version of "Sing" that was de-vocalised in 2004.
The release date is penciled in as 7 December 2005 and the current list price is $24.98  (3000 yen)
All information subject to change.  We will keep you posted as usual.

07 September 2005 - GOLD - RE-RELEASE:  NEW ART!
Have you seen a new face in the Carpenters CD's at your music store?  Yes!  It's the NEW repackaging of GOLD.  This set, set apart from the "25th Anniversary Edition" is an all-new edition with absolutely stunning artwork.  This cover was used for the 2001 single of "The Rainbow Connection" in Japan and also used on the back of the "Love Songs" CD.  The "35th Anniversary Edition" was released 10 February 2004 and this repackaged set was released this year.  No date can be found as of yet with this CD was shipped to stores.
Unless you're a collector, this CD probably won't excite you in the slightest bit.  It's a shame this wasn't the first issue released because of the beautiful artwork.
The track listing remains the same; all that has changed is the front and back cover art, the U-tray card, and the face of the CD's.  This is the second new Carpenters release thus far in 2005 in the states (first being the SACD).
03 September 2005 - CHONICLES - SET FOR 27 SEPT
CHRONICLES has been yet again pushed back to a 27 September release date.  The list price is $29.99us.  As with other cd's released like this, there are no bonuses.
28 July 2005 - CHRISTINA AGUILERA TO RECORD C'S TUNE
Pop sensation Christina Aguilera has finished recording the song "A Song For You" as a duet with jazz artist Herbie Hancock.  It's nice to see artists like Christina Aguilera appreciate the music of yesterday.

08 June 2005 - MORE SPECULATIONS ON THE NEW R.C. CHRISTMAS ALBUM
There are rumors circulating that we will not see the release of this album this year.  There is no concrete facts around to prove this true, but one can probably expect that we won't see this release anytime soon. I'd imagine we'll have a masterpiece on our hands it it's been tossed around since 2002.

11 June 2005 - "CHRONICLES" RELEASE DATE CHANGED & ARTWORK REVEALED

The release date for the forthcoming "Chronicles" Box Set has been changed from its original 21 June release to 23 August 2005.  Outside sources say that the artwork is still pending, but it is romoured to be a large picture that is the same as the TICKET TO RIDE album's (the sailboat picture).  More news as it comes in.

To view artwork,
WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW:
- The set will include the "Close To You", "Carpenters", and "A Song For You" albums.
- The list price is $29.98
- There are speculations that it will be housed in the Japanese-styled LP covers, but other sources say it will be housed in a box like the FROM THE TOP set was.
09 June 2005 - NEW JAPANESE RE-RELEASE of NOW & THEN
There will be a NEW re-release of the 1973 NOW & THEN album release 12 July 2005 in Japan.  All that I know so far is that it is to be a "special limited release" that includes the lp-like case.  More information on this soon.
16 May 2005 - KAREN CARPENTER INTERVIEW on ET! tomorrow!
BREAKING NEWS:  Entertainment Tonight will air tomorrow a lost interview with Karen talking about the "Carpenters curse"  - makes us wonder what this is all about!  ET airs 7:30pm EST.
Thanks to Andrew Zimmerman for this update!
27 April 2005 SPECULATIONS ON "CHRONICLES"

I imagine it will be in a package like FROM THE TOP, have a different picture of them on the cover and have a round sticker on it saying ORIGINAL TRACKS, includes the hits "(They Long To Be) Close To You", "We've Only Just Begun", "For All We Know", stuff like that, etcetera.

Then on the inside we will have the 3 spots for the CD's and a little compartment that holds the 3 covers.

On the back will be a listing of the songs (without numbers or saying what album it is, just a listing of all of them in order) and have the 3 pictures of the 3 covers.

Celine Dion has a set like this with her "Unison", "Celine Dion," and "The Colour of My Love" albums.

Barbra Streisand has a set like this that has her "Funny Girl OST", "Featuring The Way We Were and All In Love is Fair", and "A Star Is Born OST" CD's. The Celine one can be found in virtually any store, especially Wal-Mart but the Barbra one is harder to find.

So, nothing to get excited over unless you are a collector.
CELINE DION's collection.

24 April 2005 CHRONICLES RUMOUR:
There is a rumour cerculating that this set will be a 3-CD set of the Remastered classic albums of "Close To You", "Carpenters", and "A Song For You."  This would be a pretty good set for NEW fans trying to find these albums (which normally aren't the easiest to find in stores).  However, this would be dissapointing for OLD fans.

22 April 2005 NEW COMPILATION RUMOUR
The music site  has reported that the Carpenters are among many artists of several record companies that are going to be a part of a series called CHRONICLES which are rumoured to be a 2-CD Set.  Can we expect new songs?  I wouldn't hold my breath, but it sure would be nice to have a new song or perhaps the single edit of "Calling Occupants..." or the single version of "Please Mr. Postman."  The date is said to be 21 June 2005 (in 2 months!).  Naturally, we will keep you posted.

1 April 2005  RICHARD's CHRISTMAS ALBUM NEWS!

Finally - at last - news on Richard's forthcoming Chritmas album.
There is word from the Carpenters writer, Yuka Ogura.  Yuka has written on several of the Carpenters liner notes in Japan.

The September release is just a penclied-in month.  Nothing is 100% sure.  Commencement of the album began in 2002, and Richard later reported on the official website that he is trying to make it as perfect as he can.

One song, "Together at Christmas Again" premiered on a Japanese television special titled "Carpenters Forever", which aired in 2002.  Richard performed the song at the piano, but made no reference to the future album that he was planning on doing.  At a time, 'Together At Christmas Again" was the rumoured title of the project.  At this time we are not ever sure that the song will be included on the album.

This album is rumoured to have Petula Clark as a gues vocal and there is also rumour that there will be either a re-make of a Carpenters song (using Karen's vocals from an older recording) or a new unreleased song that was never released.  Keep your fingers crossed, but remember - it's just a rumour.
Of course, we will keep you posted.
29 March 2005 THE CARPENTER ALBUM COLLECTIONS
An uproar is in the Carpenters community as Carpenters fans worry about Carpenters titles going out of print.  "Lovelines" is the major worry!

According to AMAZON, many of the Carpenters titles are out of stock, but on order.  LOVELINES, however, isn't at all.
Another completely out of print title is "The Singles 1969-1973".  I imagine this release has been stopped because of the expanded singles CD of "Singles 1969-1981" that was released in 2000.

What can we expect?  Possibly a 40th Anniverary edition of the Carpenters in 2009?  Maybe not, the remastered classics were issued in 1998.

I will report more as soon as I get in contact with A&M Records and Richard Carpenter.

28 March 2005 RICHARD REPLIES TO QUESTIONS, NOT WHAT WE WANT TO HEAR!

Before the Easter holiday Richard submited the next segment of "Fans Ask".  As many of you probably already know, the questions were great, the responses were lacking in information, respect, and general content.

The questions were about general releases (such as future DVD projects).  Once again Mr. Carpenter claimed that there was nothing left to release (does he forget about live performances, TV shows, ect?).
Also fans were dissapointed to find out that Richard never plans on releasing the "I Need To Be In Love" video, he says it had too many "googly" eyes.  I think, however, that this was their best video by far.

's  server is currently not working, so perhaps we can expect another update (hopefully).
The best of the last update is a BIOGRAPHY written by Mr. Carpenter, himself.
21 March 2005 TOP OF THE WORLD - CONCERT
Richard Carpenter hosted the 3rd annial Top of The World Concert the other night.
There were no performance from Mr. Carpenter, but his daughter Traci sang "Rainy Days and Mondays".

Also, there were no Carpenters newsbits given no any news on Richard's slowly evolving Christmas album.

4 March 2005 - Christmas Album in '05?
In a new "Fans Ask" the following question was asked: "Fans are also dying to know if Richard plans on releasing his Christmas album, the one that includes 'Together at Christmas' again."   Richard responded: "Yes, hopefully in 2005, but I am taking my sweet time to make certain that the album is something I will be very happy with at its conclusion. I do apologize for taking so long."   Hopefully this is true!

Also the DVD-audio version of "Singles 1969-1981" is in the works.

Where to get this CD?  I got mine at Borders Books and Music.  Try Amazon if you can't find it.

The track listing IS NOT the same.  I think they should have re-titled the CD.  Nevertheless it is a great addition to the Carpenters album line-up!

NHK JAPANESE DOCUMENTARY
This documentary about Karen will air in Japan in November.  Those that helped with this include author of the "Yesterday Once More" book, Randy Schmidt; among others

THE CARPENTERS AT CHRISTMAS to be screened
The Carpenters 1977 "Carpenters at Chritmas" special will be aired 8 Dec - 12 Dec at the Museum of Radio & Television in Beverly Hills (CA). This will be the first official screening since it aired in 1977.
The special guest starred Kristie McNichol and Harvey Korman, and Burr Tillstrom's Kukla and Ollie.
This will help bring in the holiday spirit!

It is not said yet when a DVD or VHS will be released of any of the Carpenters specials.  However, Richard reported on his website that "it's likely, but not probable".  Maybe this will change his mind.  My guess is that if they can show this, there wouldn't be a royalties problem.

NO CHRISTMAS ALBUM FOR 2004
It's been nearly 2 years since it was reported that Richard was recording a Christmas album.  He reported earlier on his official website that he was waiting for the right time and just trying to get the album just right.
It seems as if this is a shelved project, but Richard doesn't shed much light on the subject.

Ever since the web site came online there was a "Fans Ask Page".  So far, the only request he has granted has been the re-re-re-re-re release of the GOLD projects. He stated that there will be no releases of the quad material, concerts, or TV specials.  So, we can count on the re-re-re-remastered classics!
September 2004
The official website reports that the forthcoming SINGLES 1969-1981 Super-audio and DVD audio CD is scheduled to be released within the next year!  The CD will have original stereo mixes and include both new instrumentation and the originally recorded ones.
For those of you who do not have this CD here is the information on the original release:
Originally released 23 May 2000.  It was the first Carpenters CD released in the 2000's.  Originally was supposed to include an insrtumental medley at the beginning.  The CD includes an unreleased "thank-you" to all the fans for all their years of support ("For All We Know - Reprise {from the London Bridge Special}")
Tracks include the following:
For All We Know - I Believe You - It's Going To Take Some Time - We've Only Just Begun - Those Good Old Dreams - Superstar - Rainy Days And Mondays  - Goodbye To Love - All You Get From Love Is A Love Song - Top Of The World - Only Yesterday - Ticket To Ride - Hurting Each Other - Yesterday Once More - Sing - Touch Me When We're Dancing - Please Mr. Postman - I Need To Be In Love - I Won't Last A Day Without You* - (They Long To Be) Close To You - For All We Know (Reprise).
* "I Won't Last A Day Without You" includes new piano solo at the end that leads right into Close To You.  It is very pretty.

Richard Carpenter also reports a plan of releasing the GOLD: 35th Anniversary Edition and the GOLD DVD as a combo set.  This would be the 3rd combo set released with the DVD.  The first one was released with "The Milennium Collection" and the second one was released in Asia with the "Christmas Portrait: Special Edition" CD.

Look for Carpenters GOLD (Soung + Vision) to be released 5 October 2004.  This time around it is rumoured to include the GOLD: 35th Anniversary Edition 2-CD set and the 2002 DVD (previously released on VHS as Yesterday Once More.
"Gold (Sound + Vision)" was originally released in Asia and included the CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT CD as the "sound" portion.  Source: Universal

30 July 2004

On the new Carpenters website Richard answers questions.  Most of them, however, include negative answers.  I asked 2 of them (quad and christmas stuff).  I was shocked to find out that Richard will NEVER release the "Make Your Own Kind of Music" special and WILL NEVER re-release the Quad mixes.  He said he never liked those mixes because they were on tour while they were done.
ALSO he tells us that he is still working on the SINGLES 1969-1981 CD re-release  (DVD audio, etc).  There is no release date at this time.

26 April 2004
Richard is finally going on the web!
Is now up!
The site reports that Richard is currently at work on SACD (Super audio CD) and DVD-audio collection that consists of 21 songs.  This is being done at Capitol Studios.
Some good news!  Hopefully some of the Quad stuff will surface!
Other artists that have SACD's and DVD-audio CD's include artists from Barbra Streisand to Britney Spears.

14 April, 2004:  AS TIME GOES BY RELEASED IN THE USA!
"As Time Goes By" is FINALLY released in the USA!  Originally released in Japan in 2001 and the UK in 2003- the USA finally sees it!
Although many fans own this CD already - the US edition does differ some.
There are NOW 15 tracks - "And When He Smiles" gets its' own track.  There is still a huge gap between the songs, however.
The artwork has been altered some and Richard has a new note in it:
Think of this album as a one CD boxed set, as it contains quite a number of rarities and curiosities. As Time Goes By is definitely meant for the Carpentersphile. If this happens to be the first Carpenters album you have purchased--as will certainly be the case in several instances--I suggest you run right out and obtain The Singles 1969-1981 or Carpenters Gold, as either or both of these albums will familiarize you with what Karen and I normally recorded.

I am completely suprised to see this CD in the USA.  It's very nice.  Better late than never, but it sure wasn't made easy!
I hope that this CD fares well.

4 April 2004:
Hell has finally frozen over - AS TIME GOES BY will be released to the USA on 13 April!  As far as I know - all tracks will be included!

The liner notes are said to be very good!  I have yet to pick up my copy (I'm doing it in an hour - my local Wal-Mart actually has it! It's $19.99 - so if you live in the USA, take the Best Buy flyer in and have them change the price!)

In the notes it mentions "AS TIME GOES BY" as an album, I am assuming (you know what happens when we assume?) that they are hinting the USA release of "AS TIME GOES BY", but I'm not 100% sure.

Looking for a place to buy GOLD that has a good price?  Best Buy has an advertisement for the 2-CD set for $13.99!  This is the first Carpenters promotion of a CD in the USA since the "Love Songs" commercial!  I imagine we will not see any further promotion. I hope we do!

"Solitaire - single version" on the GOLD release
Good news, folks!  The single version of Solitaire is going to be added to the 10 February release! This is the first time for this version to see a CD release.  This is identicle to the MONO versions that people have been talking about lately. Richard states in the liner notes ...It is most easily differentiated from the album
version by the entrance of the electric guitar 8 bars earlier, leading into
the first chorus, and the addition of a pipe organ in the second half of the
second chorus, the third chorus and the last two bars...
This is yet, another, way for A&M to reel you in to buying this collection.  Truely, this is the best Carpenters compilation since 1991's "From The Top"!

AS TIME GOES BY - USA release?
I have just heard word of a possible USA release of AS TIME GOES BY for the USA and possibly Canada.  It is rumored to be released in April of 2004 to commemorate the 35th Anniversary.  A little late, I think - since most of us US fans that are die-hard fans, already own either a UK or Japan edition!  I do, however, encourage you to take part in it's release.

ARTICLE FROM Music Remedy:

In 1969, Karen and Richard Carpenter headlined their first album. Over the next dozen years, the brother-sister duo became the biggest-selling American-born artists of the era and one of the most beloved of all time.
The two-CD Carpenters Gold 35th Anniversary Edition (A&M/UTV Records), released February 10, 2004, celebrates their enduring popularity by collecting most of their singles (all 21 Top 40s), many of them in their later remixed versions; numerous popular album cuts, and a few rarities--40 songs in all, each digitally remastered. The package also includes a reminiscence by Richard, who produced the compilation, as well as his recollections about each recording.

Featured are three selections previously unreleased in the U.S.: the 1999 completions of Leave Yesterday Behind, a 1978 recording; their 1980 version of The Rainbow Connection that fans have clamored to be released for years, and California Dreamin, a 1967 recording starring a 17-year-old Karen.
Their debut single in 1969 was a ballad version of Ticket To Ride that showed some chart potential by reaching #54. Then came the gold: (They Long To Be) Close To You (#1), Weve Only Just Begun (#2), For All We Know (#3), Rainy Days And Mondays (#2), Superstar (#2), Hurting Each Other (#2), Sing (#3), Yesterday Once More (#2) Top Of The World (#1) and Please Mr. Postman (#1). All 10 gold singles are on Carpenters Gold 35th Anniversary Edition.

The other Top 40s are Only Yesterday (#4), Goodbye To Love (#7), I Wont Last A Day Without You (#11), Its Going To Take Some Time (#12), Theres A Kind Of Hush (All Over The World) (#12), Solitaire (#17), I Need To Be In Love (#25), All You Get From Love Is A Love Song (#35), Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft (#32), and 1981s Touch Me When Were Dancing (#16), and what would become their final Top 40. The album also includes Merry Christmas Darling (#1, Christmas), as well as the Oscar-nominated Bless The Beasts And Children, Top 10 country Sweet, Sweet Smile, and other favorites.

On February 4, 1983, Karen passed away. The album concludes with Karens Theme, initially written by Richard for TVs The Karen Carpenter Story (1989), and featured in his 1997 A&M album Richard Carpenter-Pianist, Arranger, Composer, Conductor.

Today, more than 20 years after their last recording, more than 20 years after Karens death, and now 35 years after Carpenters were first heard on record, Richard writes, One can only imagine the music that could have been made had Karen lived; I really feel that the best was yet to come. At least we have these recordings, and many others, as quite a legacy.

CARPENTERS: The Essential Collection BOXED SET In Stores Now! ; DVD/CD Combo Pack!

On October 22nd A&M Records / Universal Records released a new "redone" version of the previously released From The Top, released in 1991 along with The Millennium Collection, and Gold DVD. Also released that day was a "combo-pack" of the GOLD DVD and MILLENNIUM COLLECTION CD.
This boxed set to me is a hype for desperate Carpenters fans who want new material to go out and buy it. It is pretty well ripping fans off by selling all the songs from From The Top plus a few more tracks. Import releases in USA FYE stores!
The releases "Carpenters" (with the different cover, inner sleeve of LP) and "Reflections" are very common now to find in USA FYE stores. While vacationing around the country I ran into several copies of these at the FYE stores. Nothing is too special abut these releases. I havn't yet included them in the Discography page due to lack of time but here is some info...

"Gold" DVD in USA and CANADA has come!
Finally for the USA and Canada we have a NEW Carpenters release on the way. The last release was Singles 1969-1981, in 1998. This release is titled Gold. However, this is a spin off of the VHS release Yesterday Once More, it is just titled differently but on the newer DVD format. The DVD quality es excellent! The only thing that differs from the Yesterday Once More VHS is that when the video says Yesterday Once More, they changed it to say Gold. The menu is beautiful but very simple.
